Bit late to the train but BookTok got me and I started reading ACOTAR {can’t wait for it to hit TV!) & Somehow TikTok algorithms found out I have been served an unfathombly high number of ACOTAR Memes. The only thing still making it through is an odd sliver of culture, (if you count “Gen Z or Boomer” as culture).

👗 Kicking off the Big one from the week: The Met Gala, where this years theme was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, with a dress code of “garden of time”, leaving alot open to interpretation. The highlights for you: IMHO best dressed: Tyla

🧥 Kim kardashian decided to bring her emotional support sweater, Zendaya, (for once) was pretty average, Hailey Beiber skipped this years event amidst pregnancy rumours and Justin Beiber going through a difficult time (you will have likely seen the now-memed crying pics he posted)

💰 “Song of the summer” according to TikTok has been made using TikToker’s Megan Boni’s viral video asking for “a man in finance, with a trust fund, blue eyes, 6”5” which has been remixed by various artists & played over the weekend by huge DJ’s like Loud Luxury. It’s incredibly catchy, and has even made it to the next generation’s bedtime songs. 

🛏️ A couple in New York got frisky under a blanket in the park in broad daylight. The internet is outraged but still sharing amongst friends and desperate to know what happened “I need to know did they just casually come out when they were done?”

🧸 Man or Bear? Who would you rather run into in the woods alone? It’s the question being answered by women, with the majority in favour of the bear. It’s sparked anger among some men online, but snowballed into a discussion about violence against women. 

🤼 Drake and Kendrick Lamar have publically been airing their beef for Months. After a number of diss tracks back and forth, it’s come to a head with the release of (hopefully) The final track in the feud, Drake’s ‘The Heart Part 6’. If this has somehow passed you by and you need the drama explained.

🎨 A new iPad ad from Apple has some people VERY upset. The Ad speaks to the creativity of the worlds ‘thinnest ipad’ - depicting a suite of artist tools and instruments being crushed - from pianos, to paints to trumpets. People are upset at the destruction of these artistic objects asking why they couldnt have been spared or donated to those that need it. 

🎬 Two big films are dividing people like Marmite - Challengers & The Idea of You. Challengers is to some, ‘the film of the year’ and to others, “But another title suggests itself: Balls”. I’ve seen some sharing online how they couldn’t hear the audio over the volume of music, many commenting on how crap the tennis is and others who 

🍿 The idea of you I actually found insufferable, but should I have expected anything less from a Harry Styles Fanfic? Turns out the Anne Hathaway fans & fanfic girlies really love it, ‘crying, screaming and kicking their feet’ love it

Audience Insights: Gen Z, mostly

🏖️ The share of workers likely on a sabbatical has doubled since January 2019 to January of this year. Likely driven by a tight market, remote work and Gen Z expectations, many companies are now offering sabbaticals & so many more are taking them. 

🛒 Retailers are scaling back self-checkouts, to curb irritation and theft. It’s likely not a good move if your audience cohort is Gen Z & Millennials, who prefer a self checkout option. Myself included, mainly so I can avoid having to speak to anyone. 

💵 Gen Z consumers have higher debt than millenials did at the same age a decade ago. They also have higher delinquency rates for credit products (from mortgages, student loans, BNPL, credit cards etc).

Tech Frontier

⛔ More Tesla Empoyees have been laid off as bloodbath enters its fourth week. Whilst Tesla originally planned to only lay off 10%, Elon Musk has eluded to wanting to cut more than double that to recoup losses. 

🔍 Rumours are circulating that Open AI is launching its own search engine. The Search function would be powered by ChatGPT, and be able to offer full search responses pulling from various sources for a clear cohesive answer.

Social Speed Round

🤝 TikTok & Universal have finally struck a deal, so expect to see some of your favourite songs BACK on the platform! 

🦖 Possible TikTok ban could be an ‘extinction-level event’ (love that we’re comparing the creator economy to dinosaurs).
